Sustainability

Sustainability

At Pippins Primary School, we are committed to helping our pupils understand the importance of protecting our environment and creating a more sustainable future. We believe that by working together and making responsible choices, we can reduce our impact on the planet while encouraging children to become environmentally aware and responsible citizens.

Our Sustainability Vision

We aim to:

  • Reduce our carbon emissions and energy consumption.

  • Create a greener, more biodiverse school environment.

  • Equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for the environment.

  • Encourage sustainable habits both in school and at home.

  • Work with our wider community to promote environmentally responsible practices.

Sustainability Lead

Our Sustainability Lead is Mr B Rossiter, who works alongside staff, pupils and the wider school community to develop and promote sustainability across the school.

If you have any questions, suggestions or would like to find out more about our sustainability work, please contact officepippins@marish-at.org.uk for the attention of Mr B. Rossiter.

Sustainability Across Our Curriculum

Sustainability is embedded throughout school life and across many areas of the curriculum, helping pupils understand how they can make a positive difference.

Examples include:

  • Eco Warriors – Our pupil eco team leads environmental projects and promotes sustainable initiatives throughout the school.

  • English – Pupils explore environmental themes through high-quality texts such as One Plastic Bag, encouraging discussion about conservation and global responsibility.

  • Science – Children investigate topics including the water cycle, habitats, ecosystems and the impact humans have on the natural world.

  • Geography – Pupils learn about climate change, sustainability, natural resources and environmental challenges around the world.

  • Energy Conservation – Children take an active role in reducing energy use by monitoring classrooms and reminding others to switch off lights, computers and other equipment.

  • Recycling and Waste Reduction – Recycling initiatives and litter-picking activities help pupils understand the importance of reducing waste and caring for their local environment.

  • Second-hand Uniform Shop – Our pre-loved uniform scheme helps reduce waste while supporting families.

  • Biodiversity and Outdoor Learning – Gardening activities and outdoor learning opportunities help children develop an appreciation for wildlife, plants and local habitats.

  • Sustainable Travel – We encourage pupils and families to walk, cycle or scoot to school whenever possible, supported by secure bicycle and scooter storage.

Through these opportunities, we aim to inspire our pupils to become thoughtful, responsible citizens who understand that even small actions can make a big difference to the future of our planet.
