PE Curriculum
Physical Education at Pippins is built around three core threshold concepts: coordination, social skills (including sportsmanship) and resilience . From EYFS onwards, children develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, hopping, balancing and climbing, while learning to negotiate space safely and work cooperatively with others. In Key Stage 1, pupils build confidence and competence across a broad range of physical activities, developing agility, balance and coordination both individually and as part of a team. They begin to engage in competitive and cooperative activities, understanding simple tactics and recognising the importance of rules, fairness and respect .
As pupils progress into Key Stage 2, they apply and refine a wider range of skills, linking movements with increasing fluency and precision . The curriculum includes dance, gymnastics, athletics, team games and health and fitness, ensuring breadth and progression across disciplines. Pupils learn how the body responds to exercise, why warm-ups and cool-downs are important, and how regular physical activity supports overall wellbeing. By Year 6, children can evaluate their own performance, set targets for improvement and lead aspects of their own learning, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and a secure understanding of how to improve in different sports and physical activities.
