Art Curriculum
Art and Design at Pippins is built around the clear threshold concepts of developing ideas, mastering techniques and taking inspiration from great artists . From the very earliest stages in EYFS, children explore materials through physical development and expressive arts, building fine motor control, confidence and creativity. As they move into Key Stage 1, pupils use their own experiences as inspiration, experiment with drawing, painting and sculpture, and begin to understand that art is shaped by different cultures, times and traditions. By Key Stage 2, children are developing ideas in sketchbooks, refining techniques and improving mastery across a range of media while studying significant artists, architects and designers in history .
Across the school, pupils encounter a carefully sequenced range of artists and movements, from Miro, Hockney and Van Gogh to Goldsworthy, Monet, Hundertwasser and Seurat . Skills progress from mark-making, colour mixing and simple joining techniques to perspective, composition, proportion, intricate printing and working to a design brief. Children learn to reflect on their own work, justify their choices using appropriate vocabulary and adapt their ideas following feedback. The curriculum ensures that by Year 6, pupils can confidently select ideas, refine techniques and articulate the historical and cultural context behind artistic work.
