MFL
MFL Curriculum
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Pippins is designed to develop confident, enthusiastic language learners with a strong understanding of both language and culture . While MFL is optional in EYFS and Key Stage 1, formal language learning begins in Key Stage 2, where pupils develop skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing. The curriculum aims for children to speak confidently, write imaginatively, read fluently and understand and apply grammar accurately, while also gaining insight into the culture of countries where French and Spanish are spoken . Vocabulary and structures are carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure foundations before extending their knowledge into more complex sentences and conversations.
As pupils progress from Year 3 to Year 6, they move from recognising and responding to single words and rehearsed phrases to engaging in short conversations, expressing and justifying opinions, and manipulating language independently . They learn key grammatical concepts such as noun gender, adjective agreement, verb conjugation and sentence structure, using bilingual dictionaries to support independence. Topics include everyday communication, family, food, hobbies, travel, weather and cultural celebrations, ensuring both linguistic progression and cultural awareness. By Year 6, pupils can decode unfamiliar texts, build complex sentences and communicate with growing confidence and accuracy.
