History

History Curriculum

History at Pippins is structured around three key threshold concepts: investigating and interpreting the past, building an overview of world history and understanding chronology . From the earliest years, children begin by exploring their own life stories and family histories before moving into the study of significant individuals and events. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop a secure sense of chronological understanding, using vocabulary related to the passing of time, sequencing events and comparing “then and now.” They study influential figures and nationally significant events, while learning how historians ask questions and use simple sources to find answers .

As pupils move into Key Stage 2, the curriculum broadens to include the Stone Age to Iron Age, the Roman Empire, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, early civilizations such as Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and contrasting non-European societies . Children learn to evaluate different sources, recognise that evidence can be interpreted in different ways and construct informed, balanced accounts of the past. Local history studies sit alongside national and global themes, enabling pupils to make connections across time and place. By Year 6, pupils can establish clear chronological narratives, debate historical significance and use evidence confidently to support arguments, developing into thoughtful and inquisitive young historians.
