Pixie Class Space Topic.
We introduced our first 'Power of Reading' text to the children.
Astro Girl by Ken Wilson-Max is a story of a girl named Astrid who wants to be an astronaut when she grows up, throughout the book she discusses with her father the tasks and adventures she would have in space. Her bedroom is decorated in space theme memorabilia and she loves to spend time in their researching all things space. The morale of the story is that Astrid’s own mother is an astronaut and she aspires to be just like her.
The children picked the story apart exploring how they would feel if their mummy had to leave them for a long period of time, they thought about what they would say to Astrid to help her feel better and we explored the role of an astronaut.
Throughout the space topic the children have enjoyed roleplaying as astronauts in our space station...
We enjoyed lots of different space activities in the environment...
We created our own playdough aliens.
We have shared other space stories such as Whatever next! by Jill Murphy and The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson.
The children thought about the types of things they would need of they were going to take a trip to the moon. Using their phonic knowledge and sound mats they wrote a list.
They also completed a book review on the 'Astro Girl' story and they rated the book 5 stars.
We learnt that Tim Peake is a british astronaut who went to space, we watched a video where he showed us what it was like to live in a space shuttle in space.
We completed our topic with our own space adventure by having a space picnic on the moon. The children enjoyed making alien party hats and had fun consuming their vacuum-packed drinks and snacks.
It was a fantastic way to end our topic, we had so much fun together!
